What to expect at your first martial arts class

By Martial Arts Lifestyle

Quick answer: Your first class is a chance to meet the instructor, see the venue and try beginner-friendly activities at your own starting level. Wear comfortable sports clothing, bring a drink and arrive with enough time to settle in.

Trying martial arts for the first time should feel like a useful introduction, not a test. Your free class is an opportunity to see the training space, meet the instructor and decide whether the atmosphere and programme suit you or your child.

Before you arrive

Choose the programme that best matches the student’s age and goals. For children, Martial Arts Lifestyle offers Ninja Tykes for ages 3–5, Little Dragons for ages 4–7 and Junior Kung Fu for ages 8–12. Adults can choose Adult Kung Fu, Ladies Only Kickboxing or Tai Chi.

When you book, share anything the instructor should know so the team can recommend the most suitable starting point. The academy will confirm the session details directly.

What to wear

Comfortable sports clothing is a practical choice for an introductory class. Bring a drink and avoid clothing or jewellery that could get in the way of movement. You do not need to arrive looking like an experienced martial artist—the point is to begin.

What happens in class

The exact session depends on the programme, but new students can expect a welcome, guided activities and a chance to try foundational movements. Children’s classes use age-appropriate exercises and positive encouragement. Adult programmes combine technical learning with movement and fitness at a suitable starting level.

After your free class

Take a moment to think about the teaching style, class atmosphere and how you felt during the session. Ask about the next suitable class and any clothing or equipment requirements before deciding what comes next.
